I have finally moved to Tehran for the first time in my life! and have made a home in Iran after 26 years. So far so good but I know I haven’t seen much yet. The challenges are still ahead.
The most important thing is that I feel really happy. I have founds lots of friends and there are quite few people friends and relatives that I can count on in the land that I have not lived for so long. I am back to the land of Hafez and Rumi: music, madness and mystisim. Presently having very interesting discussions every night, on the meaning of life and love, and interpreation of mysticism and madness. I am alive again.
To you

What do I have to do with garbage in Zahedan? Well, we(the NGO which I have been the head of Mission for) have been building garbage collection points in the slum areas of Zahedan where there are poor Baluchis and Afghan refugees. This painted garbage collection points have changed the image of the neighborhood. They look fantastic. Kids in fact love to come to drop the garbage there! We initiated something and I am thinking that we will see these all over the city in a year. Well, let’s hope so!

It is the last night in New York. I have left many times and there has been many ‘last nights’. But tonight is different, I am going back to Iran. This times to stay for a long time hopefully. This is the result of many years of going back and forth and contemplating on the idea altogether and every time, there has been a new plan. So here it is finally, I am packing again but this time to leave and stay in Iran.

How do I feel? A bit anxious and worried but excited and hopful. A lot is happening there, not all for better unfortunately. But then I am thinking, perhaps it is an interesting time to be there. Who knows what is next but it is happening and I am happening too. I shall keep you posted of all the happenings: People and Politics, Tehran and Traffic, Environment and Earthquake…

I visited Rasht and Chaf in the north of Iran few days ago. I believe the last time I had seen that part of the country was 35 years ago. I know it has been a long time, so I had this beautiful image of the north, clean, cozy, quite, green …. and guess what I found: dirty, crowded, noisy, a bit green but full of cars and ugly shops and buildings, except the building of municipality in the Center of Rasht, left over of the Russians during WWII.

And one more thing, just look at this, a car without a plate number or any signs whatsoever. There are plenty of them being driven… what would you call this, crazy or what?

The North, was not what I had imagined. I am so disappointed. I didn’t see anything else in Rasht but cars and while driving to Chaf, going through the main road that runs through all the cities and towns, I only saw ugly, dirty, garages, repair shops, all kinds of stores with all kinds of shapes and sizes, with absolute disregard to harmony or beauty for that matter. I won’t say anything about the beach. So there it goes, the North.

I have been dealing with urban search and rescue (USAR) and earthquake the whole week. I have been talking to all kinds of people. Everyone is scared and I am asking myself, am I mad or what? Do I want to live in this city? Why, where, how… Mega and Mad, Populated and Polluted, Tense and Terrified, Dirty and Depressed, Noisy and Nervous, … but!
